January's Birthstone - little known facts...

Ahhhh, the richness of garnet!

1.   The name "garnet" comes from the Latin word for seed or grain: "granatus." Such a name was given to the red garnet for its close resemblance to a pomegranate seed (by the way, garnet comes in all colours, except blue!).

2. In many customs, including Modern, Ayurvedic, Traditional, Hebrew, Roman and Arabic, garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. People who are born in January and associated with garnet are often energetic (when motivated), deep-down sincere, and can be devoted to a cause (including friendship and love) if they are self-driven to do so. They are loyal friends.

3. As a birthstone, garnet is a protective and guiding gem. It is believed to aid with inflammation disorders.

4. It has been found by healers that garnet both induces imagination and creativity but it also assists dreams to reveal past life experience. Garnet is said also to attract love and strengthen bonds.

5. In the past, friends gifted each other garnet to express their affection for one another and to ensure that they would meet again..
